just because it is an opinion

does not mean it is intrinsically valid or valuable

does not mean it is simply an aside incapable of causing harm

does not mean it even has to be said

especially if it is factually incorrect and a continuation of falsehoods that drive in problems rather than ease them

so just because it is an opinion does not mean we can’t tell you it isn’t welcome

and maybe

if you back your thoughts up with FACTS rather than OPINIONS

you wouldn’t feel so attacked and hurt when people cut your OPINION down to its rightful place

it’s a poor life that can only rely on OPINION for worth

especially on opinions based on utterly wrong statements and uncritical thought

» “I’m Entitled to My Opinion” is Bullshit

alimarko:

asgardian-feminist:

iamabutchsolo:

I got into a slight argument with a few people on facebook stating that the CEO of Chick-fil-A has a “right to his opinion” when he says that he supports “traditional marriage” and gives to anti-LGBT organizations and that therefore we need to be mindful of that opinion.

Lemme break it down to you how that’s a terrible argument, not only in this case but in all cases in which someone’s oppressive opinion is defended as being “entitled” to them.

Being entitled to your opinion assumes that opinions live in a vacuum in which they are abstract ideas and remain as such for all eternity. Someone may be “entitled to their opinion” in the abstract and when there are no tangible consequences like, I don’t know, what you think the best Power Ranger is. But when that opinion is 1) fucking oppressive and ignorant - i.e. “I don’t recognize unions that are not heterosexual marriages,” and 2) leads to a political action that directly affects others - i.e. donating money to anti-queer and anti-reproductive rights organizations/lobbies - then that person surrenders their right not to have their opinion called out as being oppressive and harmful when it in fact is because your opinion no longer lives in the abstract; it is now concretized into action and so cannot be divorced from the fact that it arose from your opinion.

“Entitled to my opinion” is also something that oppressors frequently say to silence the oppressed when the latter wants to hold the former accountable for their messed-up ideals. It is a clear example of the privileging of discourse when an oppressed person, in this case gay people, assert that a straight person’s opinion of them is toxic, but a straight person can ignore that by asserting that “nothing else needs to be said because I have an opinion and I am entitled to say it and no one can criticize me because its my opinion.” Privilege is being able to say something oppressive, then silence people when they take a stand against it because you can’t deal with the consequences. Privilege is putting your own individual “rights” to say oppressive shit before the rights of the subjugated to be treated justly.

And finally it is particularly not the obligation of oppressed people to say that our oppressors are entitled to their opinions when they are constantly trying to subjugate and dehumanize us, no matter how nice or pleasantly they say it or how pleasant their intentions may be or how ignorant they are of their consequences. Oppressors get no free passes. We are entitled to be treated fairly. No one is entitled to be oppressive.

THANK YOU. This applies to abortion as well; I respect someone’s opinion to personally be pro-life (as in you, yourself would never have an abortion) but when you campaign and vote for legislature that restricts or criminalizes abortion, your “opinion” no longer exists in a vacuum. When it affects and oppresses others, it becomes more than just “your opinion.”

I’m going to create a library of text posts for people to refer to when they try to argue with me and have no idea what they’re saying. And this is definitely going on it.

» Bangladesh’s Hindu women fight for divorce rights

arielnietzsche:

For this article, I have mixed feelings. The thing I disagree is that it is false that Bangladesh is the only South Asian nation to be prosecuting Hindus. India certainly has many, even more than Bangladesh, of prosecution of Hindus. However, from the family and the heritage I was brought by, my ancestors escaped due to the fundamentalism, which was supported by westerners, who allowed the eradication of my fellow Bengali Hindu brothers and sisters. To the writer of this article, who are you to point out the Hindu-Muslim riots?—you have not seen it with your eyes as a Hindu or a Muslims nor are you native to this issue. Muslims too are processed in India—the BJP and other conservative parties show a hatred towards Muslims; dismissing the case to allow this western idea that all Muslims are terrorist, and Pakistan and it’s people are in process to eradicate India (Ghazwa e Hind). This is false and rather stereotypical to think as such. My father, who was born in East Pakistan (modern day Bangaldesh) escaped during the 1971 atrocities, due to the rise of fundamental Pakistani militants, which was supported by America, to ethnic cleanse Bengalis, especially Bengali Hindus. My father, unlike the others in his family and other relatives, went back to Bangladesh, because again, he faced prosecution in West Bengal for being a Hindu. Sure, in a nation of Muslim majority, discrimination of minority is inevitable, however, it doesn’t mean that the minorities are minorities in other places and start to prosecute the minorities, or the Muslims. In Gujarat, a very diverse place, especially of the Persian, who were expelled from their land many centuries ago, still face prosecution for having ‘Arab’ like features and being Muslim.

The article is rather offending Bengali women—so all Bengali Hindu men are misogynist women beaters and there is none in other communities? The article degrades and underestimates the culture of Bengalis, and the femininity in Hinduism, but forgets that there is misogyny and patriarchy existing globally, not only in Asia.

» Men experience hormone changes once their wife or sexual partner becomes pregnant.

allarecreatedequal:

Men are affected by pregnancy. How can we dismiss their right to have an opinion about abortion?

To me it seems as though a man’s opinion on abortion is only dismissed if he’s pro-life…

I’m sorry, I must have missed the part where men(in this case cis) will have to give birth. Because then they might get a say in abortion if they are the pregnant one.

boots-and-glitter:

Abortion is wrong on so many levels.

I don’t care what your argument is. It’s fucking wrong. What did that baby do to you?! Just put it up for adoption if you really don’t want it.

Adoption is an alternative to being a parent, not being pregnant.

workework:

so much shit about abortion lately, or, more than usual i should say. no, people will not stop getting abortions. doesn’t matter if some miracle happens and it’s all made illegal. some girls are even forced into it by their parents. it happens, unfortunately.. but sometimes it’s for medical reasons. when a woman has a 97% chance of death if she goes through with the pregnancy, who’s choice is it to have an abortion or not? let a child be born without it’s mother or let the mother live when it can be prevented?

it’s a fucked up thing to think about. imagine having to make the decision. those of you who know me know that i’m pro-life. but you also know i consider any topic from many different perspectives. basically i’m not a stubborn fuck. for those who don’t know me, if my situation had been different and i were involved, making it MY choice too, i’d be a father today. in my mind and heart abortion = murder. all you aggravating pro-choice excuse makers with that “an unborn fetus isn’t considered a human being herp derp” can go fuck yourself. “women have the right to choose what to do with their uterus.” can go fuck yourself too. the bitch CHOSE to take the dick and got pregnant. you commit a crime- you go to jail. you get pregnant- you have a child. there’s no “get out of jail free card” so why the fuck aren’t you having your child? should’ve been smart about your dick.

can’t afford to raise a child? put it up for adoption. my mom was put up for adoption simply because she wasn’t wanted. yeah, kinda wrong, but they didn’t kill her. she was taken in by great people and now she’s doing just fine many years later. raised me just fine, and i’m pretty goddamn awesome. what’s wrong with that? yeah the system can be fucked up sometimes, some people take in kids for all the wrong reasons. but there’s just as many people who care about kids. shitty people will not go away. people who abort kids exist right? i just don’t see how a human being with any heart at all can picture a fetus being killed and not feel some kind of remorse for supporting that shit. and then there’s the doctors that actually DO it.

CONTRACEPTION. use it. why the fuck not?!

then there’s the annoying Jesus freaks. not bashing religion or anything, if you take part in any religion that’s your choice. that’s a sensible choice to make. true definition of a choice to be made. but there are the extremists. bringing God into every argument, bullshit about heaven and hell, all that. basically trying to preach to anyone they argue with. personally i think they should stay out of all debates, arguments, and even conversations. logic>belief, ESPECIALLY in an argument. sorry. a pro-life preacher can go all day with the worst pro-choice believer in the world, and pro-choice will probably seem to make more sense because God, heaven, and judgement will be thrown around the whole time from the pro-life end. (except to other firm believers in what the pro-lifer is saying, of course) and it’s incredibly annoying to read or listen to that. besides.. you know how many murders have been committed because “God told me to do it.” !? (of course he didn’t really tell them that, moron, people are just fucking nuts) and btw, thinking that everyone should practice abstinence is a complete waste of time. preach it in your household and hope for the best. i know a few amazing teenagers who actually take abstinence seriously, and it’s a truly beautiful thing to see.

when it comes to political figures (the main source of the abortion discussions) and who to vote for, vote for who you want. who’s best for you. that’s the point. other people will vote opposite. that’s how democracy works. abortion is not illegal, so anyone promoting it in their campaign is considered legitimate. and liking their Facebook page just to bash them in comments on everything they post is fucking retarded and completely defeats the purpose of the “like” feature.

the way i see it, personally, meaning your opinion means nothing on this part, if you’re perfectly healthy and able to have a child but decide to get an abortion.. i wish you’d get hit by a bus, live through it, and become paralyzed from the neck down. if you for some reason decide you want to be the doctor performing the abortions.. you deserve the worst possible life imaginable, and live to be 200. then drown in your own feces.

An abortion is actually than giving birth, studies prove it. I think it’s just around 14%.

“the bitch CHOSE to take the dick and got pregnant.”

Well let me tell you about this thing called rape where a women* doesn’t have the choice if her attacker happens to be male and doesn’t wear a condom and she gets pregnant. No one ever chooses to get raped.  Also there are situations where women* are forced to by their partner to have unprotected sex so that they will get pregnant to their partner will have control over them. What if the guy said he was going to put a condom on and didn’t is it her fault then too?

Adoption is an alternative to parenting, not pregnancy. Do you know how taxing it can be on a women*? Did you know that she could even lose her job over it? The costs that go into being pregnant when you are not supported or have little income can send a person into piles and piles of debt. Even if they are going to put it up for adoption they still have to pay for all the hospital bills, doctors bills, maternity clothes, proper food, and so on. Being pregnant is not cheap and not everyone has the ability to afford it.

Your mom is lucky that she seems to have had a not too bad experience in foster care. I’m glad that you acknowledge how terrible the system it. But did you know that around 30,000 children each year age out of foster care and have no where else to go because there were just too many to be adopted? Did you know that because of this that they will probably be homeless?  If you are so mad about not being a father then go adopt some child in need instead of whining about a bunch of cells that where aborted. Because that’s all that they were, a bunch of cells, a clump to be exact.

Contraception. Not everyone has the ability to get it and in societies where abortion is illegal so are things like the pill and other contraceptives. And we can’t forget rape. Don’t even bring up that it’s a small percent. It still happens and you downplaying that means you’ve just downplayed getting raped.

Totally agree on the religion thing. And it has been proven that teaching abstinence only education does nothing.

“the way i see it, personally, meaning your opinion means nothing on this part, if you’re perfectly healthy and able to have a child but decide to get an abortion.. i wish you’d get hit by a bus, live through it, and become paralyzed from the neck down. if you for some reason decide you want to be the doctor performing the abortions.. you deserve the worst possible life imaginable, and live to be 200. then drown in your own feces.”

By the by you can’t be pro-life and support such a monstrous idea. Let me give you some more things that will show you might not really be a pro-life as you say you are. Because what you really are is anti-choice.
